Webtoon Update (02/21/2024)

Webtoon is almost up to date! After this Friday all of the places where you can read "Mixten Genetics" will be on the same page!

It's exciting, but also a little daunting. At that point I need to keep up momentum to make sure I'm finishing an episode a week before it goes online. I still feel like on occasion I will need to take breaks and put the comic on hiatus to keep ahead, but still. It will be nice knowing that whenever a new page is uploaded it will be completely new to everyone!

Now that we're getting deeper into the story, specifically as we head toward the end of Chapter 1, I want to look into ways to further promote the comic to grab more readers. Most of what I've been doing is promotion through social media, but I'm looking into to some physical events as well. There's a local convention, Incrediblecon, that is hosted in North Charleston, South Carolina and I'm thinking as long as the convention happens this year I will be getting a table. I'm also going to Momocon in Atlanta this year, but I don't think I'll get a table there. Instead, I think I'm going to pass produce some stickers and just leave them in places for people to take. I don't think anyone would complain about free stuff. I've seen other people do similar things, so hopefully it's ok. I don't want to buy these things and then have someone come behind me and chuck 'em in the trash. If anything, maybe I'll just hand some out. I'll figure that out as it gets closer.

I guess that brings me to a final point, because I want to produce some physical stickers to give away I will be posting a poll probably in the next week or so to see what people would like me to produce as stickers so keep an eye out for that on Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr... all the usual places.

Makin' it (02/16/2024)

It has been a great week for productivity, even if it hasn't seemed like it. I'm currently letting Webtoon catch up with the story to this point which is giving me the ability to snazz up the way I arrange my panels. It's also letting me get a little ahead so that updates with new pages will fall a week after I finish them (roughly). That means you guys are seeing something new at around the time I'm finishing the pages for two weeks away. I had been trying to get to this sort of rhythm for a while, so it's nice to see it actually starting to fall into place. The most recent page(s) featured here will show up on Webtoon next week and then at that point both places will be, literally, on the same page.

Going forward for updates Webtoon will be getting the new pages first, then I'll post them here and DeviantArt. I want people to still have the ability to read where they prefer, but since Webtoon updates automatically, it's always gonna be first. I'm going to be adding each page I finish there and scheduling it in advance. I THINK I can schedule posts in DeviantArt, but I'm not sure. If I can, then I take back my previous statement.

If this site ends up being the last place updated, that's not the worst. I want to transition this site to be more Easter Eggs and additional info anyway. The way the site is set up probably isn't the best way to view the comic anyway. Not while it's in progress, at least.

One final note, I have gotten back to streaming on Twitch on Saturday nights (7:30pm EST) and picked back up with the Minecraft Mixten Lab project. We've made HUGE progress on the lab and I plan on working on Mixten's personal office tomorrow night.

New Year, New Format (02/07/2024)

Sorry for that unplanned month long comic hiatus. I kind of got stumped by the shift to Webtoon. The image dimensions for things posted to that platform are very different from the dimensions I had been using, so I had to figure out the best way to transition from what I had done to what I will do. I'm still not happy with how abrupt the change is from the pre-Webtoon pages to the current, but I at least know how to tackle fixing that.

Despite the change I actually like some of the freedom I get from the way Webtoon does things vs how I had been doing it. I had been using a premade manga page template and modifying the panels to the shapes I wanted, but I was still making each page an actual page. That definitely constrained my art in a way that I did like. I'm sure someone who started learning how to make manga style comics from the start wouldn't have had the same issues I did, but it is what it is. Regardless, Webtoon allows for each "episode" to be multiple pages. From now on I will be dealing with Mixten Genetics the same way. I will eventually shift the layout of the comic here to be similar to how Webtoon handles it. That way the comic will be the same format regardless of where you read it. Right now the "pages" here are just part of an "episode" there. Once I'm caught up on Webtoon, this side will also be using the "episode" format.

So what's the benefit of reading one place vs the other? Well, Webtoon allows for you to subscribe and get notifications when I update. Here, you just have to check back. However, the benefit of the site is it allows me to add WHATEVER I want. Do I want to make a graphic a hidden link to a secret message? Maybe. Then the only way for you guys to find that sort of neat Easter egg stuff would be to come here. Same goes for reading up on Character Profiles and the like. Both will be relevant sources of content in the future and I'm looking forward to figuring out how I can use both in neat ways.
